Introduced as the Mercury XM-Turnpike Cruiser concept car in 1956, the striking and innovative lines constructed by Italian coachbuilder Ghia stoked the imagination of what a car of the future would look like. Just a year later, in 1957, the Turnpike Cruiser entered production retaining many of the same design ideas that made the concept car so remarkable. The convex curves and dashing chrome trim amount to an impressive display of 1950s American aesthetics and are backed by plenty of performance, courtesy of a 290-horsepower 358-cubic-inch V-8. This engine was paired with a 3-speed Merc-O-Matic transmission operated through an innovative “keyboard control” push-button selector mounted on the dashboard.

The example offered here is a Mercury Turnpike Cruiser Convertible finished with a replica Indianapolis 500 Pace Car livery. As such, it is finished with Sun Glitter paint, gold graphics, and a black convertible top. The year 1957 was particularly important for the pace car at the Memorial Day classic, as the racecars were provided two laps—one parade and one warm-up—around the 2.5-mile oval before the green flag waved at the beginning of the race. This additional exposure certainly delighted the Ford Motor Company, whose car was fully on display leading the 33-car field.

Luxuriously appointed, the interior mirrors the exterior theme with two-tone black and pale yellow leather seats. Noteworthy amenities include a push-button radio, tachometer, clock, and power-operated convertible top.

With its eye-catching Pace Car livery, this Turnpike Cruiser Convertible will surely turn heads at events across the country.
