Conceived by Bill Johnson, of West Coast Motors in Los Angeles, in 1963, the Triumph TT Special was a stripped-down, race-prepared version of the Bonneville, specifically designed for off-road racing.
The TT Special came with high-compression pistons, hot cams, and high output ignition—good for 54 brake horsepower. A close-ratio gearbox was fitted, sprockets altered, and larger exhaust pipes were tucked under the frame, without silencers. The forks had special springs and valves, the lights and speedometer were deleted, and only a tachometer was fitted. The bike weighed 350 pounds, 30 pounds less than stock.
In 1965, TT Specials won more American off-road races, including flat-track, desert races, scrambles, and hare-and-hounds, than all other makers combined. Only 900 examples were built in all. The bike on offer is a very nicely restored, matching-numbers example with no compromises.
