“Step-ahead” and “Look Ahead” were keywords from Ford when the 1951 model line was introduced. "Step-ahead" engineering applied to the 1951 Ford that was designed and built from a "Look Ahead" viewpoint that intended for its customers the finest transportation for many years to come. Ford proudly stated that “Forty-three new 'Look Ahead' features have been engineered and built into the ’51 Ford to meet your every need……to keep you far out front in style, performance and economy.”
By far, one of the most popular and desirable Ford models for collectors of this year has always been the Ford Custom Convertible, a beautiful example is being offered here. Seven body styles were offered in the Custom V-8 series with 793,763 built in total for this group, with 40,934 being the desirable convertible, this accounts for just five-percent of the production. It was an uncommon sight on the roads then and that scarceness has only increased with time.
Beautifully restored and a former AACA National First Prize (Junior) winner in Gainesville, Florida, it is reported that this 1951 Ford Custom V-8 Convertible was a very solid original car before being restored in this outstanding fashion by a Ford marque specialist. The Ford is said to “run and drive like new.”
Running smoother and quieter in 1951 due to select new internal components, the car is driven by the renowned 239-cid, 100-hp flathead V-8 engine and is matched to a three-speed manual transmission. The engine bay is presented in the tidy manner that one would expect with such a detailed restoration. It is currently within a prestigious Florida auto collection and has been professionally displayed and maintained.
The uncommon Casino Cream paint presentation is beautiful and properly vibrant. While Ford history lists this as being one of the famous “spring” or “Easter” colors that was introduced in April 1950, the owner conveys in this case that the color was a “late production color.” It looks spectacular with its tan convertible power-operated top and similarly shaded interior. Among the equipment features are rear fender skirts, heater/defroster, clock, beautiful brightwork and trim elements, AM radio, stylish dashboard and interior appointments, color-keyed steel wheels with center caps and trim rings and Firestone wide whitewall tires.
Along with the AACA First Prize, the Ford is also a “multiple-time” Early V-8 Ford Club of America Dearborn Award winner. If you like the sun, wind and open road, you’ll surely be drawn to the sleek and shining convertible. A simple touch of the foot and you’re sailing down the road to your favorite destinations behind the Ford’s smooth, easy power.
