For Ford executives, it was hard to forget how the original Mustang set the pace as the fastest selling, most successful new car ever introduced. It captured the hearts of many as a new concept and type of car. The Mustang exhibited flair, excitement, good handling, good balance, smooth riding comfort, roominess and a hint of luxury. Then, as now, Ford and Mustang were pacesetters in this form of car and had three new rooflines for 1971, including the “flat-back” which was officially called the SportsRoof, and was exclusively seen on the Mach 1 and Boss 351 for 1971. The Hardtop and Convertible were also available, as was the SportsRoof without the two mentioned performance packages.

This is a very nice example of Boss 351 and is reported as a “number two” car and looks sporty in Light Pewter with black deluxe interior, and it has many factory standards for performance, handling and musclecar style. Among these standards include the 351-cid, 330-hp H.O. V-8 engine with four-barrel carburetor and connected to a four-speed manual transmission that is console-mounted and has a T-handle Hurst shifter. Additionally, the 1971 Boss 351 offered Traction-Lok differential, Special Cooling Package, Competition Suspension, Dual Ram Induction with functional aero-style hood scoops, twist-type hood locks, dual Racing Mirrors with driver's side remote, power front disc brakes, Boss 351 identification, front spoiler, low-profile rear wing, body side-stripes and blacked-out lower back fascia and bodyside stripes. This example has an AM radio, power steering, rear window defroster, fold-down rear seat, Rim-Blow steering wheel and Magnum 500 chrome wheels which were a factory option in period. The Ford Mustang Boss 351 represents one of the Blue Oval's last true musclecars. Just 1,806 were built in 1971, their lone year of production, and they remain among the hottest performers in the world of small-block Fords.
