The Shelby CSX was built from 1987 through 1989. It was based on the Dodge Shadow ES and modified by, and sold new, as Shelbys. The Shelby CSX (Carroll Shelby experimental) was the fourth model in the Shelby/Dodge series of limited production high performance vehicles by Shelby Automobiles Inc.

With the CSX, Shelby demonstrated that you could take a commonplace four-cylinder, front-wheel drive car and turn it into a high performance, 130-mph sports coupe. Sources indicate that they were limited to 750 examples built and had a base price of $13,495. It should be noted that the CSX used a turbocharged engine that was also utilized in Shelby's 1986 GLH-S, 1987 GLH-S and Shelby Lancer.

The Shelby engineers took the Chrysler 2.2-liter Turbo I "long-block" engine and substituted Turbo II components for its induction and exhaust tracts, modified the election fuel injection system and added a larger turbocharger. The revisions also included a logic module for a tuned intake manifold, and an air-to-air aluminum intercooler. The AiResearch T3 turbo supplies a maximum of 12.0-psi of boost. The modified unit is matched to a five-speed manual transmission, and reports from the era report it to have produced 175-hp at 5,300-rpm and 175-lb/ft of torque up to 4,800-rpm. Performance in the CSX gave impressive numbers: 0- to 60-mph in 7.1 seconds and a top speed of approximately 131-mph.

The suspension was modified with low pressure gas-charged Monroe Formula GP struts with coilover high-rate sport springs and specially calibrated anti-roll bars were used on the front. In the rear is a semi-independent trailing arm suspension featuring Monroe Formula GP shocks and a large-diameter solid anti-roll bar. This lowered the car by nearly three-quarters of an inch, plus rack-and-pinion steering was a standard to further enhance control. Power-assisted vented front disc brakes and solid rear disc brakes were altered from the Daytona Shelby Z for enhanced stopping results. The CSX rides on 6.0- by 15-inch Shelby Centurion II brushed aluminum wheels.

The interior was similar to the Shadow and each 1987 Shelby CSX was identically equipped. There were no available options. However, it had a generous list of standard equipment that included air conditioning, a four-speaker AM/FM/cassette radio, special floor mats, rear defroster, and 60/40 split folding rear seat. It had full sport instrumentation, model-specific Shelby turbo boost gauge and digital clock. Shelby additions were a four-spoke sport steering wheel with his signature and Shelby Logo horn button and a numbered dash plaque.

The exterior came only in a two-tone paint combination with black over silver. With this exclusive paint combination was a custom designed Shelby aero package that included a redesigned front grille, new air dam, lowered side skirts, modified lower rear valance, and wraparound rear spoiler that gave it a distinctive appearance that was genuine Shelby. There was an assortment of Shelby decals displayed to promote the exclusive Shelby branding.

This particular car is reported to be virtually unused and is described as “new,” with plastic on the seats, with its window sticker and still has the cardboard mats in place. The less than 100 miles are documented as actual.
