The Shelby Charger was built with a modified Mopar platform which bore the Shelby name, but was sold under the Dodge banner. The 1985 and 1986 versions had a great number of common features. The Shelby Charger remained an aggressive front-wheel drive American sports car that had been further improved by the addition of a 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with a Garrett AiResearch T3 unit with Chrysler/Bosch multi-point fuel injection. This compact unit turned out approximately 146 horsepower and was driven by a close ratio manual five-speed transmission.
Along with the powerplant; the Shelby Charger had improved brakes, firmer suspension, and the pedals were designed to promote heel and toe shifting. The front suspension was redesigned to allow the use of equal-length half-shafts; other mechanical features included low-profile tires on newly conceived style of cast aluminum wheels and gas-charged front struts and rear shocks.
As always, the Shelby-based vehicles also had a graphics package, extending into the interior. The redesigned inside comprised much improved premium high-back bucket seats, full instrumentation with a Rallye gauge cluster with a tachometer and a standard AM/FM stereo unit. One of the main visual up[dates to determine if it is a 1986 model is the now-mandatory third brake light positioned in the rear center.
Based on the three-door hatchback versions of the Omni, the production figures for this limited edition model indicate that 7,669 cars were built in four different colors that consisted of silver, blue, red and black. This particular example is one of 3,495 presented in Black with Radiant Silver accent stripes, which is reported to be original to the car. This is said to be a Canadian vehicle, so speed and distance is measured in kilometers and kilometers per hour. The polished wheels are also original and the Shelby is also reported as being used in a sparing manner. The availability of these models is sparse due to the numbers built in period; they represent an interesting period and are an uncommon Shelby automobile associated to Chrysler lineage.
