Unveiled to the watching world at the Paris Salon in October 1962, the Silver Cloud III shed some 100 kilograms compared to its predecessor while gaining a higher compression 6.2-litre V-8 engine. At the motor show, in addition to the display from Rolls-Royce, and the sister Bentley S3 model, a variety of coachbuilders also had stands to demonstrate their preferred styling for the new luxury saloon.
Although never officially referred to by the factory as a ‘Flying Spur’—that was a name reserved only for Bentley—Rolls-Royce’s in-house coachbuilder H.J. Mulliner, Park Ward Limited finished 52 examples of the Silver Cloud III in four-door Sports Saloon form. The car offered here is one of only 17 that were built in left-hand drive. The rolling chassis, LSFU519, was sent to have its bodywork, design number 2042, fitted on 9 March 1964.
According to copies of the original factory build sheets, this Sports Saloon was originally configured in Shell Grey to accompany Scarlet leather upholstery, while electric windows were specified for the front passenger compartment. The completed Rolls-Royce was then delivered on 15 May 1964 to first owner, Mrs FC Shouse of Washington DC in the United States.
While little is known about the intervening years, this Silver Cloud III was treated to a complete restoration by marque experts at Vantage Motorworks of Miami, Florida in 2010. At this point, the car was changed to its current Jaguar Old English White hue over tan Connolly hide. It was acquired by the consignor in February 2022. Having since moved to the Middle East, it is recommended that this Rolls-Royce should receive a mechanical inspection prior to being driven.
Complemented by an owner’s handbook, jack, photographs of the restoration, tool kit, spare wheel, and tyre pump, this notably rare Silver Cloud III ‘Flying Spur’ Sports Saloon bodied by H.J. Mulliner, Park Ward Limited will add a slice of quintessential British luxury to any collection.
