By 1939, Harley Earl had created very forward looking Cadillac designs with clean, smooth lines that almost eliminated running boards and espoused closely integrated headlights and elegant detailing. The 1940 models showed this off to great effect. Offered in five series and no fewer than eight body styles, the most impressive, of course, were the town car and formal sedans, designed for clients who were to be driven rather than drive themselves. Proudly added to the Charlie Thomas Collection a decade ago, this formal Cadillac has all of the accoutrements one could hope for. The divided driver’s compartment is fitted with black leather, a clock, heater, AM radio, restored chrome, and stunning wood grain window sills. Yet more opulent is the rear portion with separate radio speakers, folding jump seats, clock, Art Deco lighting, smoking accessories, fine cloth upholstery, and excellent wood inlay. The engine and undercarriage show signs of aging after a restoration some years ago. On the road or on display, this marvelous motor car will be a prize to behold, perfectly suited for any formal event.
