Some people frankly admit that they would be more than proud to be seen in this American classic. And certainly its graceful, sweeping lines – admired worldwide – are a complement to your fine taste and judgment.

For 1957, Ford’s Thunderbird got a styling update, with tidy tailfins resembling the big Fords’ theme, and a new grille. The rear section was extended to create more luggage space, and in the process the 1956 “Continental” spare was moved back inside. The 312-cid Thunderbird Special engine was now rated at 245-hp.

This Willow Green 1957 Thunderbird was acquired by the Pond Collection in 1998. Equipped with Fordomatic transmission, it has power steering, power brakes and a Town and Country signal-seeking AM radio. The Firestone 7.50-14 whitewall tires are mounted on chrome wire wheels.

Body contours are excellent, the paint and brightwork very good. The paint has a few minor blemishes, but presents very well. A green canvas top harmonizes nicely with the body and the green and white vinyl interior. The engine compartment is correctly detailed and the undercarriage is spotless. Mileage shown is 374, believed to represent sparing use since restoration.

Although two-seat Thunderbirds were much loved, Ford Motor Company concluded a larger car would be more popular. For 1958 a unibody four-seater was introduced and the product planners were proved right: sales increased by 75-percent. The cachet of the two-seat Thunderbirds continues, however, the 1957 models preferred by many as the high point of the genre. This car is an excellent example.
