When Porsche re-introduced the exclusive 911 R in 2016, a lucky few experienced what many had desired for years: a street oriented 911 developed by the motorsport division utilizing components from the company’s top-tier GT models, but without an obtrusive rear wing typical of track-focused offerings. With the immense demand built up from the 911 R, Porsche capitalized on the opportunity to bring this idea into full series production with the 911 GT3 Touring in 2017. Based on the updated 991.2 platform, this rendition of the GT3 marked the return of a manual transmission the model and paired it with a screaming 4.0-liter flat six-cylinder engine.

Now in its second generation, built on the 992 platform, the latest 911 GT3 Touring retains the same engine as the previous iteration but gained a double-wishbone front suspension similar to the setup used in the RSR racecar. This allows the front axle to be twice as stiff as that of the first generation without compromising ride quality thanks to the improved body control. The 992 generation of the GT3 proves once again that the 911 gets better by the year with incremental development being the Stuttgart-based manufacturer’s defining ethos, coupled with the longstanding tradition of offering seemingly endless options for customization and personalization.

Delivered new to Porsche St. Louis, the 911 GT3 offered here perfectly embodies both of those principles, having been equipped from the factory with the Touring Package and a staggering list of desirable options, totaling nearly $50,000. Finished in stunning Chalk paint costing $4,220, the exterior features a motorsport stripe decal in Aurum that perfectly offsets the crisp color scheme, while a carbon-fiber roof and mirror trim, Exclusive Design taillights and fuel cap, and LED headlights in black provide a pleasing contrast. Forged, lightweight, center-locking wheels painted in Satin Neodyme complement the exterior graphic.

Inside this 911 GT3 Touring, the interior is lavishly furnished to an equal degree. Exclusive Manufaktur Black Leather— at $15,350, the priciest of all the included options—combines with deviated stitching for a luxurious effect. Meanwhile, the white dials of the central tachometer and Sport Chrono Stopwatch atop contrast nicely with the dark upholstery, while seatbelts in Silver Grey compliment the contrast stitching. The high-tech carbon-fiber theme on the exterior carries through to the interior trim inlays and door sills.

A host of comfort and convenience options coddle occupants, starting with Adaptive Sport Seats Plus with 18-way power adjustments, leather-trimmed backrests and painted inlays mirroring the exterior color. An extended-range fuel tank, a front-axle lift system, Storage Package, auto-dimming mirrors with integrated rain sensor, ambient lighting, under-door puddle light projectors, and a Bose surround sound system further enhance the driving experience. Most notable of all features, however, is the six-speed manual transaxle, providing a pure, unfiltered, mechanical connection to the high-revving engine’s 502 horsepower and 346 pounds-feet of torque.

With just 85 miles on the odometer at the time of cataloging, this 911 GT3 Touring presents in near showroom condition, making it a perfect choice for the enthusiast who wishes to experience the pinnacle of Porsche’s current lineup without having to place a factory order.
