The TE21 with elegant bodywork originally designed by Hermann Graber debuted at the Paris Auto Salon in 1955 to rave reviews. Alvis’ well-heeled clients included H.R.H. Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Coachwork was produced under license by Park Ward of London starting in 1958. Production continued through July 1965 when the Alvis was taken over by Rover. Just 353 of the Series III models were built beginning in 1963 until the close of production.
Documents indicate that chassis no. 27162 was originally delivered to Brooklands of Bond Street on August 6, 1964. The TE21 was professionally converted to LHD by well-known Alvis specialists Red Triangle Autoservices Ltd., when it was purchased from company CEO Rowland Simmons in September 1996. At the same time it was fitted with electronic ignition, thermostatic engine cooling fan, engine compartment extractor fan, period Reuter reclining seats, inertia reel seat belts (front only), anti-theft device and an upgraded Harvey Bailey Engineering suspension kit comprising thicker front sway bar, rear sway bar and Spax adjustable shock absorbers. The pedals were moved forward a bit to accommodate taller drivers who are also aided by the telescopic steering wheel.
Included in the sale is a leather-bound history book containing early correspondence, 1967 Alvis catalogue of spare parts with exploded diagrams, original-style owner’s manual, all service bills from the current owner, a substantial quantity of new spares, the original Alvis steering wheel (currently fitted with a Moto Lita) and photos and documents relating to the bare metal re-spray and partial re-chroming which took place in 2011.
The car has been the recipient of awards at various regional California shows including an Award of Merit at the Ironstone Concours in 2011. Used regularly and continuously maintained by its California-based British émigré for the last 14 years, this Alvis will continue to serve its new owner well in the years to come.
