Among fans of classic trucks and off-road vehicles, the FJ40 series Land Cruiser is a legend among giants. This lantern-jawed Toyota truck helped cement the Japanese automaker's reputation for ruggedness and reliability around the world.
Originally purchased from Toyota's first U.S. dealership to sell the Land Cruiser - Hil Probert in Larkspur, California - this example was later discovered in Sacramento, with what is believed to be extremely low original mileage. Ironically, a steel bead from the fuel cap assembly was found to have lodged itself in a hard fuel line. Having most likely sat for decades, this early unfortunate scenario had the fortunate benefit of saving this Land Cruiser from years of wear and tear.
This example, a factory soft-top, is considered one of the rarest versions of the Land Cruiser range and was recently subject to a comprehensive restoration by noted FJ40 collector and restorer, David Ehlen of Genesis Four Wheel Drive in Portland, Oregon. From its factory-original Volcanic Beige exterior and waxed cotton-canvas roof, to its charmingly back-to-basics vinyl seats and cabin, it has been rebuilt to as-new condition, with no expense spared in bringing this Land Cruiser back to life. It is no surprise this truck took home Best in Class honors when exhibited at the Forest Grove Concours d'Elegance in 2013.
Performance has been upgraded by the fitment of a later 2F Land Cruiser engine. The four-speed manual transmission, front and rear live axles with semi-elliptical springs, and this more powerful 4.2-liter inline-six are now ready for years of new adventures, both on- and off-road. Having purchased the truck three years ago, the current owner has changed out the steering box, installed front and rear seat belts, had a new brake proportioning valve installed, and fitted new original size tires.
This impeccable Land Cruiser comes with an original factory manual and restored jack.
