The Torino received a major facelift in 1972, with the grille and bodywork receiving mixed reviews from critics. The public voted with their pocketbook, however, and sales stayed strong. The Gran Torino took over from the GT and Cobra, with the two-door hardtop selling 132,284 units. The fastback coupe sold 60,794 units, but there were also two Gran Torino station wagons in the lineup. Only about six-percent of all Tornio production for the year were Sport models. This package included as standard, a 302 V-8, pleated-all vinyl trim, hood scoop, color-keyed dual racing mirrors, and unique grille.

For an additional $44, the buyer could opt up for the 351 Cleveland engine as seen in this black hardtop. This car has been spiffed up a bit further than when new with the an engine dress-up kit including finned aluminum valve covers and air cleaner, five-spoke mag wheels, radial GT tires and an aftermarket tachometer. Factory installed features include an automatic transmission, air conditioning, vinyl roof, vinyl with cloth insert bucket seats, and console. The fit and finish of this car is quite good and the interior is excellent overall. Ford Torinos and Gran Torinos today are best remembered as stylish and more luxurious alternatives to more common musclecars. They may not have the same performance as some of the era's icons, but they still deliver a wallop when correctly configured, and they typically sell at prices that make entry achievable for most enthusiasts.
