When Worlds Collide

Sotheby’s has sold some of the greatest pieces of contemporary art. But you can’t drive a Warhol, and no Basquiat sounds like this.

This August, RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction will be headlined by the union of Pop Art, music, and the greatest contemporary car of all time—the 1996 McLaren F1 GTR, chassis 10R.

Gordon Murray described this machine as “Number one. The purest expression," and today it stands among the most desirable of all 106 examples. The first “XP” prototype for the 1996 McLaren F1 GTR, one of only two short-tail F1 GTR prototypes, and with unrepeatable provenance following 25 years in the collection of rock legend Nick Mason, chassis 10R is poised to make history when it crosses the block in Monterey.

Never before have the worlds of art, music, and engineering collided so spectacularly.
