RM SOTHEBY’S SEES EXCEPTIONAL RESULTS FOR DAY TWO OF ONLINE ONLY: SHIFT/MONTEREY AUCTION
BLENHEIM, Ontario (15 August 2020) – This evening, RM Sotheby’s sold the race-winning 2001 Ferrari 550 GT1 Prodrive for $4,290,000 during the second and final day of lot closures for its Online Only: SHIFT/MONTEREY sale, making it the most valuable car ever sold in a dedicated Online Only collector car auction to date.
Consigned to RM Sotheby’s Online Only auction directly by the Ferrari 550 GT1 Prodrive program promoter, Care Racing Development, single owner of the car since its race preparation in 2001, the Ferrari 550 GT1 Prodrive, serial number CRD 002/2001, is the second of ten Ferrari 550 GT1 examples built by Prodrive and is arguably the most illustrious of them all. In a competitive career spanning more than four years, it competed in 49 races, taking 15 pole positions, 14 outright race wins including The 24 Hours of Spa in 2004, making it the last V-12 engined Ferrari to win a 24-hour race overall, and finishing on the podium some 29 times. Impeccably presented in its Spa 2004 livery, CRD 002 goes to its next caretaker in fully rebuilt, race-ready condition, accompanied by its full race log and mileage charts, which were maintained by Care Racing Development and Prodrive, and the Red-White Stripe Book “Certificazione per Veicoli da Competizione”, confirming its Ferrari Classiche certification.
The sale also saw excellent results for additional Ferraris, including the desirable first-generation ‘short-nose’, Classiche certified 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB by Scaglietti, presented in fully restored, concours condition and equipped with its original engine, which brought $1,980,000; a low-mileage, Classiche certified 1991 Ferrari F40, one of 213 examples delivered to the United States and retaining all of its major original factory components, which sold for $1,386,000; and an exceptionally well-optioned 2017 Ferrari F12tdf, one of just 799 examples produced and showing less than 750 miles from new, which achieved $825,000. Certainly the most delightful little Ferrari to find a new home during the Saturday sale session, a special Laguna Seca edition Ferrari 250 California Spider Junior finished in attractive Rosso Fiorano Mika saw an impressive 48 bids before selling for a final $96,800 (est. $12/16k).
An official press release will be distributed next week, and complete results from RM Sotheby’s Online Only: SHIFT/MONTEREY auction will be made available at rmsothebys.com. Results are listed in USD and include applicable buyer’s premium.
