Completed at the factory in February 1970, this rare Porsche 914/6 was finished in Light Ivory over a black leatherette interior, just as it appears today. This six-cylinder Porsche was prepared for the US market and equipped with an electric heated rear window, Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio, a leather steering wheel, and chrome whole disk wheels. Remarkably, the original bill of sale is on file from Holbert’s Porsche Audi in Warrington, Pennsylvania and reveals the $6,817 purchase price. Holbert’s was an important early Porsche dealership established by racecar driver Bob Holbert, father of five-time IMSA Camel GT champion Al Holbert; in fact, correspondence between Al and this car’s first owner is on file, with the younger Holbert apologizing for the delayed delivery of driving lights for the 914/6—and refunding the buyer $32.50!
The Porsche remained under the care of the original owner for over three decades, and an incredibly thorough collection of invoices from this ownership tenure are found within the accompanying history file. Well over 100 pages are present and detail all the repairs and maintenance performed in order to keep the car in good running order. Thanks to the diligence of this owner, the car was enjoyed on the road and today, 86,898 miles show on the odometer at the time of cataloguing. Importantly, as shown on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the car has retained its matching-numbers engine and gearbox, which further increases the desirability of this machine.
In 2018, the White Collection acquired the car, and it has received monthly start-ups to ensure the mechanical systems are functioning. Paint meter readings across the body show to be largely consistent; however, the driver’s side rear quarter panel received a respray at some point in the past. Owner’s books, tools, an assortment of spare parts, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and a large collection of invoices will accompany the car.
The beneficiary of long-term original ownership and presented in its striking original color combination, the desirability of this 914/6 is further increased thanks to its matching-numbers engine and transmission, overall originality, and extensive documentation. These nimble, yet powerful, 914/6s are true Porsche creations and are not to be underestimated: They deliver the kind of driving experience one would expect from this iconic automobile manufacturer and are increasingly sought-after by enthusiasts.
