By the time 1970 rolled around, the musclecar wars were at their height, and Chevrolet’s Chevelle SS had been the company’s warhorse since 1966. At last GM relented and engines over 400 cubic inches were installed in the A-body series without COPO special orders. Two new LS5 and LS6 454 cubic inch models were launched, but the familiar SS 396 package RPO 25 was bought by an overwhelming 53,599 customers – a mix of coupes, convertibles and El Caminos.
The Chevelle was revised for 1970 with a more sculptured look and four headlights now smoothed-in alongside the grille. The RPO Z25 Super Sport package added $445.55, or 31-percent more than the cost of 1969s Chevelle SS, but the base 325-hp engine was replaced by the 350-hp L34. The 396 cubic inch L34 big-block generated 350 horsepower and could power the car 0- to 60-mph in 8.1 seconds and a quarter-mile in 15.5 seconds at 90.42-mph.
The SS now came standard with F41 sports suspension, which included front and rear sway bars and stiffer springs. Buyers got power front disc brakes, F70 belted tires on 14 x 7, five-spoke SS wheels, chrome wheel openings and dual exhaust chrome tips. Black-out panels, front and back, were capped with SS emblems.
This particular example is equipped with a 454-cid V-8 big-block from 1974. It was a police issue engine that produces 235-hp, and this impressive unit is fitted with a console-shift Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission. The engine has been upgraded with roller rockers, cams, aluminum heads, Holley intake and Edelbrock four-barrel carb.
This American muscle legend was originally finished in Classic White with a red interior, it is now nicely presented in a color reminisce of the 1970 Cranberry Red with black stripes, top and interior.
The Chevelle is equipped with power steering, power brakes, bucket seats with console, power top, and front disc brakes with rear drum, plus dual mirrors, dual exhaust and AM/FM radio with cassette player. All gauges function as they should and even the clock works. The car is fitted with correct T3 headlamps, SS wheels with BFGoodrich Radial T/A raised white letter tires.
The fit and finish is nice, the door gaps are correct and even, as is the hood and trunk. This represents a North Carolina car that runs and drives extremely well, having been recently driven from Michigan to Kentucky and Tennessee and the ensuing return trip without issue. The Chevelle comes complete with its jack and spare.
With its spectacular color combination and abundance of usable horsepower, all the next owner needs is a sunny day and an open road.
