Publicly displayed in June 1975 at the Munich Olympic Stadium, BMW management unveiled what would be the first in its long-running 3 Series model range. Internally coded as the “E21”, it was available in two-door saloon and convertible body styles, and was equipped with four-cylinder engines ranging in capacity from 1.6 to 2.0 litres.
In 1977, the 320/6 was introduced and became the first six-cylinder engine available in the 3 Series. The following year, BMW unveiled the fuel-injected 2.3-litre M20. Producing 143 PS, the 323i became the top-of-the-range factory model until production ceased in December 1983. The main visual differentiator between the four- and six-cylinder cars was the presence of twin-headlamps with the latter.
Delivered new to the Panzer dealership in Nürnberg, this 323i left the factory finished in Resedagrün Metallic over a black and grey cloth interior with Recaro seats and a sunroof. First registered on 12 March 1981, it was added to the consignor’s collection in 2015, from which point it was shown in a museum exhibition. As a result of its time on static display, buyers are encouraged to carry out a mechanical inspection prior to returning this car to the road.
Today, it is still finished in Resedagrün Metallic, and had covered 67,425 kilometres at the time of cataloguing. As a “top-of-the-range” E21, this 323i is a highly desirable example of the first-generation BMW 3 Series.
