Contrary to Ferrari’s usual practice of introducing their newest model at a major auto show, the company chose to show their new 330 GT 2+2 to the public for the first time at their annual pre-season competition press conference in January 1964, with a more formal appearance occurring the following month at the Brussels Salon. With its bodywork designed and built by Pininfarina, the 330 GT 2+2 differed greatly from the 250 GTE and the interim 330 America, as it was fitted with an unusual four-headlamp nose. Underneath, the car featured numerous updates and included a wheelbase 50 millimeters longer than that of the 250 GTE, a Dunlop dual-circuit braking system, and Koni adjustable shock absorbers.

The second-generation 330 GT 2+2, later dubbed the Series II, was introduced halfway through the 1965 model year. Its most noticeable change over the first-generation was the replacement of the car’s quad headlights with a more subtle dual-headlight treatment, while a proper five-speed gearbox replaced the previous model’s four-speed with overdrive unit.

On offer for the first time in four decades, this 1966 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Series II certainly ranks among the most unique 330 GT 2+2s ever constructed. One of just 36 right-hand-drive examples produced, 8563 was ordered new via Maranello Concessionaires of Surrey, United Kingdom for delivery to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in East Africa. It was optioned with power windows and finished in the exquisite livery of Azzurro (silver blue) over Bleu Nuvola (cloud blue) leather trim.

According the 330 GT Registry, 8563 would make its way back to the United Kingdom, registered under the plate “APG 18H” in the early 1980s; acquired by collector John Kelly from noted racecar driver David Piper in 1983, it was exhibited by Kelly at the now-famous Ferrari Days Modena event in September 1983 before being exported to the United States that fall. It was later acquired by Walter Medlin in 1984. As the car sits today, it appears paint work was started at some point, with the exterior finish stripped, and a few areas exhibiting the original color. The interior appears to be original. Importantly, the car retains its numbers-matching engine. It rides on ten-hole cast alloy wheels. A single Borrani wire wheel is located in the trunk’s spare tire well.

Stored and off the road for many years, in its current state the car is believed to be fairly complete, providing a great basis for a full restoration. Presented now from the Lost & Found Collection, this is rare example with a beautiful factory color combination when new—making chassis 8563 an alluring opportunity to acquire a unique 330 GT that has not been shown in years.
