As the penultimate evolution of the XK platform, introduced with the XK 120 in 1948, the XK 150 S 3.4 was the near-pinnacle of the third-generation model introduced in 1957. The use of three S.U. carburetors, straight-port intake manifolds, upgraded camshafts, and a lightened flywheel contributed to a raise in power to 250 hp, while four-wheel disc brakes provided stopping power that had been proven at Le Mans.
The XK 150’s re-worked body design included a wider one-piece curved windscreen and thinner doors, providing greater interior space and comfort. Not entering production until 1958, the roadster variant featured roll-up windows to ensure optimal weather protection.
This exquisite example of the top-shelf XK claims a premium 1990s restoration that led to numerous concours awards and five consecutive perfect scores at the national JCNA Concours Championship. According to a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, chassis no. 830856 was completed in early July 1958 and originally finished in Carmen Red paint over a black interior. The car is estimated to be one of approximately 200 examples that were factory fitted with a close-ratio gearbox. Distributed to Jaguar Cars New York, the XK 150 was reportedly raced in both the United States and Australia before returning to the Pennsylvania area by the early 1990s.
In 1992 the Jaguar was purchased by John Spillman, and he retained Olde York Classics of York, Pennsylvania, to conduct a comprehensive restoration. In addition to receiving an exhaustive mechanical rebuild, the roadster was fitted with new original-stock components including proper 'J' headlights, original gaiters for the rear springs, and a correct radio. The level of detail even extended to sourcing a proper original owners manual with annual maintenance chart.
The delectable coachwork was treated to a premium refinish in British Racing Green while the interior was reupholstered in handsome biscuit leather complemented by a matching cloth top. Executed to the highest possible standards, the careful restoration took five years to complete; the pristine roadster emerged ready for use in 1997.
The dividends were immediately apparent as the Jaguar earned a perfect score and a First Junior award at the AACA National Fall Meet in October 1997. Over the following 13 years the XK 150 S was awarded at no less than 82 additional events that included the Eastern Concours of the United States, the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance, two appearances at the Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance, and an AACA Senior Award (perfect score). Most importantly, the roadster was a regular winner at JCNA national Concours Championships, scoring over 99.9 points six times from 1998 through 2008, and a perfect score of 100 for five consecutive years from 2009 to 2013. In summary, the XK dominated the competition with first-place accolades at JCNA championships in ten out of eleven years between 1998 and 2013.
In January 2014 Mr. Spillman sold the beautiful Jaguar to the consignor, who has continued to dutifully maintain the car as needed. Documented with JCNA scoring sheets, a list of events attended, and the JDHT certificate, this stunning XK 150 S 3.4 Roadster is arguably the finest example to be offered in many years. The JCNA champion is ideal for further presentation at club gatherings and regional concours d’elegance, or driving enjoyment; either way, it is sure to make a fantastic acquisition for marque enthusiasts or collectors of seminal postwar roadsters.
