Often dubbed “the original S-Class”, Mercedes-Benz’s 170 S represented achievable luxury, with an engine boosted to 6.5:1 compression for 52 horsepower, racing-inspired double A-arm and coil-spring front suspension, and a four-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh in all four gears. Whilst it may have lacked the great size and luxury of today’s S-Class models, this car set the path in that direction with very comfortable interior fitments and by being both sporty and easy to drive.

The design of this Cabriolet A charmingly apes that of the upper-line 300S Cabriolet of the same period, albeit in scaled-down form, including the chrome beltline trim, the curve of the rear deck, and the rounded front wings. Finished in a classic cream, it has undergone cosmetic and mechanical restoration, resulting in a very pleasant overall appearance. Much of the chrome throughout appears to be original, whilst the body has been refinished and the interior more recently reupholstered in dark green leather. The interior sports a Becker radio, smoked-glass sun visors, and a rear jump seat, which can be folded down into a package tray. The surprisingly capacious boot carries a top cover, spare, and partial tool kit, as well as a three-piece set of fitted luggage, the ideal companion for a spirited trip in a Cabriolet A.

As one of the most desirable of the 170 S models, this Cabriolet A would make an ideal companion to a 300 of similar design in one’s collection, or it would stand on its own as a fascinating little Mercedes with heritage that continues to the present day.
