While the Viper’s basic concept was drawn from the Izod show car of 1985, its development gathered steam in early 1988 during a casual meeting between Chrysler president Bob Lutz and design Chief Tom Gale. They envisioned a simple, high-performance “image car,” an idea that was also supported by Carroll Shelby, who was acting as a consultant for Chrysler at the time. The resulting Viper made its debut at the 1989 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and was an immediate hit, drawing unsolicited order requests. With its incredible V-10 engine, stunning performance and race-inspired handling, the Viper legend was born, and its basic essence continued with careful development through the 2000s. A second generation was produced from 1996 through 2002, but the example offered here is the first of the acclaimed third-generation car. Completely restyled, the Viper legacy continues with more than 100 changes and improvements made to the chassis, brakes, suspension, engine, transmission and cockpit.
