A handful of changes were evident on the new Ferrari 412 when it was launched in 1985 to replace the 400i. Featuring a deeper front spoiler, slightly raised boot line, and increased performance thanks to a slightly large V-12 engine (up to 4,942 cc from 4,823 cc), the 412 provided much the same driving experience as the 400, but with a welcome boost in performance.
Horsepower was increased to 340-hp at 6,000 rpm and it boasted a 0-60 mph time of 6.7 seconds. Notably, this would also be the first Ferrari fitted with ABS. Owners could opt to have their new 412 equipped with either a three-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual, with only about 20 to 30 percent of total production receiving the five-speed transmission. The five-speed transmission was not available in the United States when new and only a handful of examples have been imported stateside since. Production of the 412 concluded in 1989 and the 412 would be the last Ferrari 2+2 until the introduction of the 456 GT of 1992.
The 412 example presented here is truly one of the best of its kind. Believed to be three owners from new, it was delivered to the U.S. though Shelton Ferrari of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in April of 1986, and later owned by professional golfer Greg Norman and Wisconsin based car collector Richard Munz. It was bought by its current owner from Richard Munz through Shelton Ferrari in 1994.
Fitted with the incredibly rare and desirable five-speed manual transmission, the car still retains both its original coat of red paint and original beige leather interior. In addition to a correct tool kit, jack, spare parts catalog, and owner’s manual with warranty card, this wonderful 412 is presented with a detailed file of documentation and receipts, illustrating the superb quality of service the car has received over past twenty years. The file also includes a clean CarFax report, which confirms both its mileage and ownership history. This comprehensive documentation includes receipts and invoices for every single service and tune-up since 1994, all of which was performed exclusively by trusted Ferrari “guru” Tim Stanford Foreign Cars of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The self-leveling suspension has been freshly rebuilt, and the car has recently received a full service which included a top-end rebuild.
Considered to be the best driving example of its kind, 412’s equipped with five-speed transmissions are wonderful cars to drive, and this particular example surely will not disappoint. A highly original five-speed example boasting under 42,000 miles from new, this 412 is sure to turn lots of heads at FCA meets or out on the open road, and would be the perfect car for the enthusiast with a family of four looking to enjoy the finer points of Ferrari ownership.
