Like the Model T before it, the Ford Model A assumed the role of a universal vehicle, being used for everyday transport, farming, and just about any commercial application imaginable. Ford rolled out nearly 5 million Model As from 1927 through 1931. Rugged, simple, and easily adaptable, its enduring charm makes it one of the most widely adored collector vehicles in the world.

This fascinating Ford is a wonderful example of the Model A’s versatility. A genuine United States Postal Service truck, it features wooden coachwork by York-Hoover Body Company specifically designed for the US Postal Service in the 1930s. In the early 1960s, Jack Dixon of Pennsylvania reportedly discovered this Model A mail truck sitting in a junkyard being used to keep hubcaps and other small parts away from prying eyes. As a Model A enthusiast, he was intrigued by the unusual body and impressed by the truck’s remarkable condition, so he made a deal to buy it. On bringing it home, Dixon found it was incredibly well-preserved, and began the process of carefully stripping away layers of house paint to find the original USPS lettering and the truck number—10205—still intact. After much research, Mr. Dixon sourced the few missing pieces from other original donors and treated mail carrier 10205 to a full and exacting restoration to period-correct standards.

After many years of enjoyment, showing the Model A at Antique Automobile Club of America events in the Northeast, Dixon sold the truck. It changed hands a few times through the years, always landing in the care of attentive collectors who recognized its importance.

In recent years, it was displayed at the Saratoga Auto Museum for a period, on loan from a significant Northeast-based collection. As offered here, the authentic restoration is well-preserved despite being done in the 1960s, and the truck presents with a lovely careworn patina.

This charming Model A is a must-have for any early Ford enthusiast and would be a wonderful centerpiece to virtually any collection of Americana.
