Initially introduced to the public in 1944 as the PV 444, the sedan was Volvo’s initial mass-market car of the postwar period and featured unibody construction. A range of four-cylinder engines provided power to the rear wheels through a three-speed manual transmission. Introduced in 1958, the PV 544 featured minor styling and mechanical changes. The windscreen was constructed from one piece of curved glass. Volvo widened the rear bench and narrowed the front seat backrests, allowing the rear bench to seat three individuals. A new Sport model featured twin SU carburetors. The transmission was upgraded to a four-speed manual. In 1962, a larger 1.8-liter engine became available.

The PV 544 offered here is a well-preserved example with plenty of charming character, thanks to a welcome level of patina. Finished in Medium blue, the exterior notably features chrome bumper overriders, dual mirrors, and mud flaps. Plush blue vinyl seats with gray cloth inserts complement the exterior. The well-appointed interior additionally includes air conditioning and a modern JVC stereo. Under the hood, the engine features a cylinder head from a later Honda B20 engine and is fitted with twin SU carburetors, both desirable upgrades that enhance performance and driving enjoyment. A finned IPD valve cover rounds out the tasteful modifications. Invoices on file note a fresh battery installed in 2018 and a clutch bushing and set of door hinges ordered in 2012.
