The aluminum trailers produced by the Airstream Company of Jackson Center, Ohio are undoubtedly one of the most famous images of the traveling zeitgeist that embodied the postwar American spirit of individualism. Painstakingly constructed by hand from aircraft-grade aluminum and fitted with a full suite of built-in conveniences, the exorbitant retail cost of an Airstream product rather naturally ensured that only the most committed and well-heeled travelers could afford such a striking and luxurious travel trailer.

In 1964, Airstream offered 13 models in a variety of configurations and lengths ranging from 17 feet to 30 feet. The Safari model, with its 22-foot length, was placed firmly in the mid-size of the company’s catalogue.

This particular example features the desirable Twin configuration, which is equipped with a pair of built-in twin beds at the front of the trailer. An additional built-in “gaucho” bed can be found towards the rear. Now presented today benefitting from a complete and professional restoration, this peerless Safari Twin truly embodies Airstream’s company motto "Let's not make changes, let's only make improvements."

The consignor acquired this trailer last year from its original owner in Massachusetts (with whom it rested in covered storage), and immediately set to work. Quite simply, no imperfection seemed minor enough to escape redress. The trailer’s underbelly and perimeter wraps were replaced—though not before the steel frame was stripped and clad in POR-15 rustproofing paint. At this time, the torsion axle, brakes, and shocks were also replaced.

The consignor notes that the trailer’s entry door interior was reskinned utilizing pre-polished sections of aircraft-grade aluminum; the door also wears a period-correct deadbolt and door handle. Interestingly, the rest of the polished aluminum body reportedly remained in especially presentable condition. All windows similarly received new glazing and chrome trim, while a desirable “Zip Dee” awning and matching fender skirts have been rendered in matching Aruba Sunbrella fabric.

Inside, this Safari Twin’s cabin is replete with new period-style finishes including flooring, countertops, refinished original cabinets, and retrimmed cushions. The onboard electrical, plumbing, and gas systems have been completely updated, and the twin external propane tanks have been appropriately polished and recertified. The trailer’s original furnace, refrigerator, and range/oven have been retained. A modern air conditioning/heater unit has been cleverly disguised by a matching aluminum shroud finished with UV-resistant clear coat. Additional new amenities include a 12-volt pump, city water inlet, and on-demand water heater.

Overall, this Airstream retains much of its original charm and character while benefitting from a meticulous restoration which provided updated utilities. This remarkable vintage Airstream travel trailer is now accompanied by manuals, documentation, spare wheel, and matching pillows and chairs.
