The fabulous Mercedes-Benz 280SL was a continuation of the luxury sports car in the tradition of the 190SL; it represents the era’s model in a series of Mercedes-Benz automobiles that has turned into an all-time hit for the company. Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Karl Wilfert were both respected engineers that, perhaps more than any others, shaped the Mercedes-Benz passenger car look for more than three decades. Although conceiving, designing and developing a car is always the work of many people, Uhlenhaut and Wilfert stamped the Mercedes line with their personalities, and in the days when there were no computers to record every facet of a car’s behavior; it was the personal judgement of Uhlenhaut that would decide how things would or would not be executed. The 280SL was part of this team’s most fruitful period; this two-seater convertible coupe was distinguished by having both a hardtop and a removable soft-top, providing that certain look that touched car lovers throughout the world, especially those on American shores.

The car is powered by a 2,778-cc, 180-hp inline six-cylinder engine that is paired with a five-speed manual transmission. This is a “well-kept original car” that displays a very clean engine bay, excellent interior wood elements, VDO instrumentation, Frigiking air conditioning, factory “star” wheel covers, Becker Mexico AM/FM/cassette, power brakes and spare tire in the trunk. From the last year of 280SL production, 830 similar cars were built during the 1971 model year.
