This 1965 Ford Mustang GT convertible was formerly in a significant Ford collection and displays many of the qualities that attracted droves of customers to the Ford dealerships when new. The GT package in the popular convertible bodystyle is always going to stand out in a crowd.
First offered in April 1965, the GT Equipment Group was only available on the 225-hp and 271-hp V-8 Mustangs and consisted of front disc brakes, the Special Handling package, quick-ratio steering, chrome exhaust tips, rocker panel stripes, GT badging and grille-mounted foglamps. Inside, the standard instruments gave way to a special gauge arrangement; this particular car has the desirable Rally Pac clock and tach.
This impressive GT convertible was delivered with the A-code 289-cid, 225-hp engine, Borg Warner T-10 Top Loader console-shift four-speed manual transmission and 3.00:1 rear end gearing. According to the original invoice and window sticker that are amongst a binder with various accumulated paperwork in regards to this machine; it was sold by O.Z. Hall Motors, Inc. in Birmingham, Alabama to M.R. Norton, also in Birmingham on July 23, 1965. The total price out the door was $3,426.26 and a 1962 Corvair was used as a trade-in.
This car has been rotisserie restored in an immaculate manner over a three year period and remains wonderfully detailed throughout. Further adding to the GT package, the car is uncommon and handsome in Silver Smoke Gray paint with Red sill stripes, Red “Pony” interior, Red top boot and a Black power top. The Mustang also unites air conditioning, power steering, AM radio, dual sideview mirrors, chromed styled steel wheels with whitewall tires and a rare remote trunk release.
It is also reported that this fine machine was the cover car for the May 1996 (Vol. 20 No. 5) issue of Mustang Times and has been the subject of “several other articles,” one of which was in the May 1997 (Vol. 20 No. 3) issue of Mustang Monthly. The page 22 article was titled “Head Turner,” and it certainly is that and more. The two magazines in which this Mustang is included are both in the aforementioned binder. This is quite the car to deliver total performance with total popularity.
