“The big M” in 1957 was styled to influence the shape of cars for years to come with what they described as their “dream car designs.” As America’s “first production dream car” they touted the shape of the future was to be found in every line and every feature. Among these features were a new roof design, new projectile side sculpting, greater trunk capacity, new keyboard controls and new-for-1957 V-angle taillight design. These daring features made for a bold, imaginative look and vaulted the passengers into the realm of superb driving ease and comforts.

This Classic White Phaeton Coupe has a black and white interior and, it is reported, a very interesting past that is surrounded by being purchased new by Winthrop Rockefeller - the former Governor of Arkansas and brother of Nelson; former Vice-President of the United States, New York Governor, businessman, philanthropist and public servant. It was purchased in Los Angeles for use at his Palm Springs, California winter home. The car was conveniently built at the western plant. When Mr. Rockefeller was elected to the Governorship of Arkansas, he was the first Republican since Reconstruction; at this time it is further reported that the Mercury was placed in his private car museum and resided in this location until his untimely death from cancer complications in 1973. The Montclair then went to the Central Texas Museum of Automotive History in Rosanky, Texas and spent the next 25-years in this safe environment.

The car’s originality is said to be “awesome.” This is conveyed to cover the original chrome and stainless components (without pitting) to the “100-percent original interior.” This status is also afforded to the door panels, carpets, seats and headliner. The car is powered by the optional Turnpike Cruiser 368-cid, 290-hp V-8 engine with an automatic transmission. The car is reported to have been sparingly driven over the course of its lifetime and the current owner relates that he drives it around 1,000 miles per year without ever having any issues. Among the other features you will find an AM/FM radio that has upgraded internal functions with the external appearance of the original factory offering. Additionally there is power steering and power brakes.

With a special ownership provenance and a low-key, little-used existence; this is indeed a special car and opportunity.
