In November 2004, Car and Driver magazine summed up the 600 series Mercedes-Benz RENNtech in the following manner; “On the street, it’s hard to find any difference between the RENNtech 600 and the stock Mercedes; that is, until you toe into the throttle about halfway. Floor it, and there’s a tidal wave of acceleration, accompanied by a bellowing roar from the exhaust that makes the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up and pay attention. But the bigger wheels and tires don’t change the excellent ride qualities at all, and that’s why it earned a five-star rating for street drivability.” This is a ringing endorsement for this fine machine indeed.
A stock Mercedes-Benz 600 cranks out a remarkable 493 horsepower and a neck-snapping 590 pound-feet of torque, and after RENNtech’s Hartmut Feyhl gets through with his extensive engine modifications (in the form of a twin turbo set-up on this car), those numbers soar to an astronomical 626 horses and 745 pound-feet. On its best run at Michigan International Speedway in period, a souped-up 600 flew from 0- to 60-mph in 3.9 seconds.
This stealth version of ultra-performance will be both fun to operate and satisfying in blowing off out-and-out performance cars. The challengers will never see it coming from this luxury sports coupe. With an automatic transmission, this RENNsport CL600 also features air conditioning, radio, AMG wheels, an upgraded intercooler and ECU, plus power windows, door locks, steering and four-wheel disc brakes. A V-12 Mercedes-Benz has inherent cache, the RENNsport version will definitely not disappoint.
