Perhaps, the best known of the already iconic Shelby Mustangs were the 1966 Hertz “Rent-A-Racer” models. It is less well-known that Hertz ordered Shelby GT 350s for their rental fleet at least through 1968. Finished in attractive Highland Green with the black Deluxe Mustang GT interior, this GT 350 is reported as originally being one of approximately 220 such cars ordered for the Hertz “Rent-A-Racer” fleet program for the 1968 model year. The small total number of 4,450 Shelby cars was built in 1968; these included the GT 350, GT 500 and GT 500KR – all available as convertibles and fastbacks. This represents one of the 1,253 GT 350 Fastback examples, the most prominent of the above listed variations.
Running with the 302-cid V-8 engine; this Shelby Mustang benefits from additional horsepower via a Paxton supercharger, boosting output to approximately 335 horsepower. The transmission is an automatic and among the additional features are power steering, power disc brakes, pushbutton AM radio, Shelby steering wheel, center console, console-mounted gauges, grill-mounted foglights, rollbar, inertia-reel seatbelts, fold-down rear seat, tilt-away steering wheel and Shelby cast-aluminum 10-spoke wheels. Fiberglass components are also part of the Shelby platform. With 56,000 original miles, it has never been restored and remains in remarkable overall condition with all original Ford sheet metal. This Shelby is reported to be a joy to drive and surely is a car one should consider further.
