Conceived in 1956, the second-generation Thunderbird was released in January 1958. Markedly different and much larger in its overall proportions than its predecessor, the four-seat 1958-1960 “Square Bird” emphasized luxury over sportiness. After three successful years of competing with the Corvette for sales, Ford correctly understood that far more American buyers were interested in buying a sporty-looking luxury car rather than a full-bore sports car. The motoring press felt the same way, and in 1958, the Thunderbird won the coveted Motor Trend Car of the Year award. Stylistically, the 1960 Thunderbird was little changed from the two prior model years, with the addition of a new grille, triple taillight clusters and minor trim changes.

Ford declared in period advertising that “no other car in the world is so sought after, so envied, so wanted as the classic Thunderbird. You’ll agree with luxury lovers everywhere…..this is the car you want to own – someday soon.” The convertible has ample room for four passengers and for 1960 had a new T-Bird exclusive. With the pull of a lever, the rear deck rises, the soft-top telescopes down inside a rear-placed well, and the rear deck would then close automatically. All of this to ensure there is no evidence of a bulge or a hump to show where the top is now located. The cleanliness of the styling lines is undisputable.

The example being offered is described as a very nice car that has recently been the recipient of a frame-off restoration. The Thunderbird is presented in white with a black soft-top and a black and white two-tone interior is an ideal match. The car is powered by the respected Thunderbird 352-cid V-8 engine, which is presented with an Edelbrock engine dress-up kit, has a very nice presentation, and is matched to an automatic transmission. Among the Specialists condition notes are that the Ford has paint and top that present very nicely; though the convertible top does need some adjustment to work properly. Doors and body panels fit very well with great chrome and brightwork trim appointments. The chassis has the correct undercoating and the interior upholstery shows very well with interior trim and bright elements that have the appearance of originality, plus the car has nice and proper fitting carpet. The glass does exhibit some age with light scratching.

Along with bucket seats and center console, you have a four-foot wide door opening that allows you to enter and leave the cabin effortlessly. The Thunderbird displays elegance and is equipped in that fashion with power top, windows and steering. The Thunderbird proudly promoted the promise of sports car handling and luxury car comforts. Fender skirts, whitewall tires and factory stainless wheel covers enhance the cars distinctive silhouette. The car is reported to run, idle, drive and stop just as it should without issue. The car is further referred to as a “nice, clean #2 rated car with no obvious defects, other than the power top.”
