In 1966 Carroll Shelby and The Hertz Corporation came up with a resourceful strategy to help get a group of high-performance, special-edition Shelby Mustangs into the hands of rental customers who also happened to be car aficionados. Ford supplied the new Mustangs with V-8 engines and mostly automatic transmissions, Shelby added extra performance and style, and Hertz gave the public contact to the exclusive driving experience that one would normally find only on a racetrack. Today, the story of the Shelby/Hertz "rent-a-racer" is renowned and the surviving 1966 Shelby GT 350H Mustangs are among the most sought-after collector cars in the world.
The 2006 GT-H was built as a 40th anniversary Hertz rental model as a tribute to the GT350-H of 1966; reconnecting the well-remembered original Shelby GT 350H with the modern capabilities of the new Ford Mustang. Ford, Shelby and Hertz reteamed with the Ford Racing Performance Group to give the 2006 Ford Shelby GT-H a very classic, muscular look along with valid performance qualifications.
The Hertz Shelby on offer has only 3,251 actual miles and displays many Shelby/Hertz-specific badges, identification plates and performance markings. The power is derived from a 4.6-liter V-8 engine with dual exhaust that is connected to a console-shift automatic transmission and 3.55:1 rear end. The car further demonstrates stainless steel X-pipe exhaust system, Handling Package, Power Package, side scoops, hood pins, specific grille and fascia, 40th Anniversary badging, Hertz badging, logoed sill plates, dash plaque and engine plaque. Some of the many conveniences include air conditioning, Shaker CD stereo, tinted windows; power seats, windows, door locks, steering and four-wheel drive disc brakes.
