Vincenzo Tabacco
1987
Marble; mounted on a painted walnut base
Inscribed "V. Tabacco" and dated 1987
31.5 in. x 12 in. x 17 in.

This dynamic marble sculpture was created by Vincenzo Tabacco and is believed to pay homage to the late, great Canadian racing driver Gilles Villeneuve. The piece appears to be of Villeneuve’s Ferrari 126 C2 Formula 1 car that he campaigned in 1982. Unfortunately, it would be the last car Villeneuve would pilot, as he died in a tragic accident during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix. A season marred by controversy and tragedy, the 1982 Formula 1 season is, however, considered to be part of one of the greatest periods in top-tier racing.

The work is inscribed underneath by V. Tabacco and dated 1987. Resting atop a large angular walnut base, the marble remains in very good overall condition though exhibits some wear as well as a minor chip along the front edge. Likewise, the base shows some signs of aging but is in otherwise good condition.
