From 1988, a special XJR-S version of the V-12 5.3-litre car was produced by Jaguar Sport, a separate company owned 50-50 by Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR). This car was presented with a distinctive body kit, special alloy wheels, suspension and handling improvements. The first 100 of these cars were termed "Celebration Le Mans" to commemorate the TWR Jaguar's 1988 win at Le Mans and only sold in the UK.
Between 1988 and 1989 a total of 326 XJR-S cars are reported as being produced with the 5.3-liter engine. After September 1989 the change was made to a special 6.0-liter engine with a Zytek engine management system that is unique to this car and provides for stellar performance. This was different from the standard 6.0-liter engine used in the late XJS models as the 6.0-liter V-12 engine was hand-built by the TWR team and included several performance modifications pushing the horsepower to 338. TWR also built and installed custom upgrades to the driveline, suspension and brakes were engineered.
The XJR-S stayed in the line until 1993, the year represented by this exceptional example; a total of 50 coupes and 50 convertible cars were built for the world market. In the United States, to commemorate the launch of the spectacular XJ 220 supercar, a limited number of 100 XJR-S coupes and convertibles were produced for the American market only. This version of the XJR-S also displayed the model-specific body kit that includes a rear spoiler, under tray, lower side sills, a custom front end treatment, a special Autolux leather interior, and larger alloy wheels and tires.
These included a reported 22 Signal Red coupes, 22 Signal Red convertibles, 22 Jet Black coupes, 27 Jet Black convertibles, two Flamenco Red coupes and the Silver Frost 'Press Cars' of four coupes and one convertible.
This great machine represents one of the special run of 100 North American spec cars that were built and were sold only in North America. This particular example is #72 of the100 cars ever produced. This particular XJR-S has been further tuned to increase torque and horsepower by having air conditioning compressor and smog pump delete. The car will go 0- to 60-mph in 6.3 seconds with a top speed of 157-mph; this is a California titled car. It has also experienced a recent tune-up, including new batteries and tires.
This V-12 classic is offered as one of the 22 presented in beautiful Signal Red with Connelly Autolux interior; the car is reported with less than 50,000 miles on the odometer and has been sympathetically cared for while being thoroughly enjoyed.
