In 1949, a group of MG leaders and designers wanted to make an MG accessible for the U.S. marketplace. They built a new model on the success of the MG TC predecessor, with added improvements. The chassis design is drawn from the larger MG Y, with coil spring front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. MG TD gear ratios are also lower and more widely spaced to compensate for the cars increased weight. The TD has a fuller, roomier appearance, and 15-inch steel disc wheels were standard - one of MG's several attempts to do away with "archaic" wire wheels. The TD also boasted a higher top speed and was immediately embraced by the public with a passion that continues to this day.
This very original MG is equipped with the 1,250-cc XPAG inline four-cylinder engine that produces 57 horsepower with a higher compression ratio and bigger carburetors. It still wears its original white color, original top, refinished interior upholstery, and it currently titled and registered with California blue plates. The rear-mounted spare, perforated steel wheels, hubcaps, folding windshield, windwings, attractive and informative instrumentation, plus rear-hinged “suicide” doors all contributed to the now iconic British period style. This tidy example has been recently tuned and is stated as being reliable for regular enjoyment.
