Mercedes-Benz introduced the 230SL, the 190SL’s successor, at the Geneva Auto Show in 1963. The car was entered into the Spa-Sofia-Liége Rally, driven by Eugen Böhringer; delivering a spectacular performance, winning the event and proving the 230SL as a true lightweight sports car. The car has a top speed of 121-mph; very respectable for the time period. For the 1965 model year, Mercedes-Benz produced 6,325 examples. Production of the 230SL ran through the 1967 model year.
The beautifully contoured “Pagoda” removable hardtop is a signature of this era of SL roadsters. The 230SL is powered by a 2.3-liter six-cylinder engine which is paired to an uncommon four-speed automatic transmission. The car rides on whitewall tires. The tan interior is reported to be original. The current owner has had the car for six years, over which time the car was exercised once a week and properly maintained. This 230SL is described as a mostly original example.
