Porsche introduced the 944, based on the 924 platform, in 1982. The 944 featured a similar but wider body style compared to the 924. The 944 is described as one of the better handling sports cars from the 1980s, this is due in large part to its front-engine, rear transaxle design which gave the car a near 50/50 weight distribution. One source reports Porsche produced 10,689 examples of the 944 for the 1987 model year.
