Road & Track magazine boldly called the 6.3 “the world’s greatest sedan,” mainly because of its perfect balance of performance and luxury. Instead of being powered by the six-cylinder engine from the standard 300SEL, the 6.3 was fitted with the powerful M100 V-8 from the luxurious 600.
The 300SEL 6.3 began as a personal project of Erich Waxenberg, a Mercedes-Benz engineer. The finished prototype was a luxurious saloon with performance equal to or better than most sports cars of the period. Mercedes-Benz liked the car so much that it was put into production in 1968 and was built through 1972. Top speed for the 6.3 was an impressive 142-mph and it could reach 60-mph in only 6.9 seconds.
This 6.3 is extremely attractive in black with parchment leather interior. A sympathetic cosmetic restoration was completed a few years ago and a major mechanical overhaul of the car was just recently completed at Doktor Benz, a marque specialist in Southern California. The consignor spent $35,000 ensuring it is mechanically ready for its next owner to enjoy. The car is reported to run and drive exactly as it should and everything works, even the original air conditioning. Very few 6.3’s are as attractive as this example and even fewer are as mechanically sound.
