Perhaps nothing screams “racecar” quite like an open wheel single seater. Now best known as the sole-supplier of the Indy Car series; this Dallara F388 is chassis number 010 and was built to compete in the assortment of highly-competitive European Formula Three series championships.
The F388 continued the evolutionary process of the F387. The most obvious changes were an increase in length, a reduction in weight and the adoption of a Dallara designed gearbox casing that still used Hewland internals.
As usual in Italy, it was nearly all Dallara, Emanuele Naspetti took the championship with the F388 taking first and second, as well as eight of the top ten positions. France was a similar story, Eric Comas finished on top and the F388 took the top five places. Surprisingly, in view of the past two season’s results, the F388 did not feature in Germany with a best of sixth in the final placings; very impressive results that would please most manufacturers.
It is shared that this chassis did race in European F3, but no specifics are forwarded. It last raced at Willow Springs, Fontana, Phoenix and Buttonwillow in 2010 with the VARA and HSR racing organizations.
The car has a reported 2,000-cc Alfa Romeo-badged water-cooled engine with Hewland Mark V gearbox (with spare gears), a Momo steering wheel, alloy wheels, racing restraint belts, Goodyear Eagle tires, spare wheels, spare nose, spare wing and an airbox that is signature for this style of car.
