The Saturn Sky was the “sister” car to the Pontiac Solstice; sometimes referred to a “cub-Vette,” it was assembled (when new) alongside the Solstice in Wilmington, Delaware. The Saturn was 3.9-inches longer than the Pontiac, but otherwise was virtually identical in dimensions. The car’s design was considered clean and came out at a time when Saturn was fighting for survival despite dealer satisfaction surveys that rated the cars from this GM division consistently with Toyota, Honda and even Lexus.
This nicely styled convertible has been transformed into a unique performer; truly a one-of-a-kind Saturn. This Sky is extensively modified with numerous performance and appearance augmentations. The most noticeable modification is in the engine bay with a 427-cid, 665 horsepower supercharged V-8 fit into this sporty platform. The engine has an Edelbrock E-Force supercharger on a base LS7 base engine built by Mallet with a proprietary cam design. Other features on this significant unit and associated components includes Billet Specialties nodular valve covers, ECM programming and tuning by V’s Performance, Corsa Cat Back exhaust system, high-capacity aluminum radiator and custom air box. The 665 horsepower reading is determined at the flywheel with the car running on 91-octane gasoline. The gears are changed via a Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission with a McLeod twin-disc high-capacity clutch, and the high performance rear end has 3.73:1 gearing with heavy-duty axle shafts. Further mechanical upgrades include Penske adjustable shocks, heavy-duty sway bars, big brake option from Mallett, custom hood to accommodate the supercharger, plus HRE wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires.
This is a true “sleeper” that is capable of outperforming most of the expensive exotics in a very “stealthy” type of package. There was an article in the August 31, 2006 Hot Rod magazine that featured similar car and it can spell out the impressive results of this type of modification to the Sky platform. This particular car has only experienced one owner from new and comes with approximately 15,100 original miles. The Saturn is reported as always being garaged when not in use and maintained to a very high standard. The car has never been raced and has been used as a daily driver in the rotation of the other cars in the owner’s collection. The car is stated to be extremely reliable and has been taken on extended trips without incident.
