Oil on board, 1965. Signed and dated lower right, framed. 30 x 24 ? inches. One of Von Dutchs most expressive pieces, Self-Portrait, is often considered his first self-portrait, Good-Bye Cruel World being his second. An expressionistic piece created in a subdued dark color palette the painting features Dutchs face entangled within a cityscape of shapes, rooftops, smoke stacks and a barbwire fence. He depicts himself standing behind the fence with his face resting on the barbwire. Intertwined between the geometrical shapes that make up his face is Dutchs unmistakable message Fuck You. This piece was produced while Dutch and his family were living in Reseda, California. Jimmy Brucker affectionately refers to this piece as Attitude being that it reflects so well Dutchs extreme attitudes. This seems like a very fitting attribution as the viewer first sees the seemingly non-confrontational face while simultaneously being challenged by the hidden overlaying message. In addition the painting also reflects Dutchs non-commercial attitude. Dutch was always well known for his spite towards material and monetary possessions and often expressed these feelings in his art. He worked and tinkered for his own satisfaction and that can definitely be seen in this painting as the overlaying text is foul and rebellious especially for the time it was produced.
