This Ice Green Metallic 911 Turbo Carrera (as it was initially dubbed in the U.S.) appropriately left the Porsche factory on St. Patrick’s Day in 1976. It was among the first 400 U.S.-specification Type 930 Turbos built, and, as were all Turbos, it was loaded for speed and comfort. Porsche’s new top-of-the-line supercar boasted a 245-bhp flat six with a single turbocharger and Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. A four-speed gearbox delivered power through a limited-slip transaxle. The Turbos were fully trimmed in leather, plus an electric sunroof, air conditioning, tinted glass, rear window wiper, headlamp washers, under-bumper fog lights, and a stereo system. They also boasted wide fender flares to cover 7- and 8-in. wide Fuchs alloy wheels, and there was both a new rubber-edged “whale-tail” and rubber front chin spoiler to help pin the car to the pavement at higher speeds.

This Turbo was first sold by Metropolitan Porsche-Audi of Maplewood, Minnesota, to Dr. Robert Baker of nearby Rochester. Options on this car included a black headliner, a right-side electric mirror, a heavy-duty starter, and Pirelli tires. The audio system appears to have been upgraded with a then-state-of-the-art Blaupunkt Berlin stereo cassette player-recorder with its separate amplifier and exotic stalk-mounted control head. Interestingly, these earliest Turbo Carreras were originally fitted with 150 mph speedometers, but with the car’s ability to easily exceed that figure, most were soon retrofitted with a more appropriate 185 mph unit. Dr. Baker took care of that on 16 February 1977, the car having then covered 4,856 miles.

Over the following decades, the Turbo saw minimal use. In late 2004, with the new odometer reading just 323 miles, German Auto Service in Grand Rapids, Michigan, installed a hydraulic chain tensioner kit, replaced a cylinder head stud, rebuilt the brakes, and performed other necessary services. The odometer read a mere 1,934 miles (6,790 actual) when the current owner purchased the car on 9 June 2007. The current odometer reading is just 6,378 miles (11,234 actual), and the consignor notes that the paint is largely original.

This concours class-winning 911 Turbo Carrera would make a wonderful addition to any collection of high-performance automobiles.
