Tasked with designing a car more attractive than the Aston Martin DB7, a car already considered to be one of the most attractive cars of its era, Zagato certainly had their work cut out for them. However, the Italian design house did not disappoint, and what resulted—the DB7 Zagato and DB AR1—are considered by many to be two of the most attractive Aston Martins ever produced, utilizing time-honored Zagato design cues with a modern flair. Although the DB7 Zagato coupes were only available in Europe and Asian markets, the Roadster was produced especially for the American market, hence its “AR1” nomenclature.

The 20th DB AR1 of 99 examples built, this particular car was finished new in Mendip Blue over a two-tone Pacific Blue and Parchment interior, just as it presents today. A copy of the car’s window sticker shows that the car is further optioned with brake calipers painted grey, power-folding side mirrors, and silver Roadster wheels. Sold new through Desert European Motorcars of Rancho Mirage, California, the car has spent the majority of its life in that state.

Today, the car presents in show-quality condition throughout, thanks to many years of preservation and proper maintenance, having only been driven 3,700 miles from new. It is accompanied by many of its original accessories, including its original car cover, owner’s manual, tool kit, leather Aston Martin jacket, umbrellas, previous service records, and copies of its build record and window sticker.

After several years of hard times, the DB7 Zagato models proved that both Zagato and Aston Martin were here to stay and still capable of producing breathtaking automobiles. The DB AR1 has proven to be a true modern collectible and is deserving of a place in any collection of Aston Martins or modern exotics. Offered in a gorgeous color combination with only 3,700 miles on its odometer, this example checks all the right boxes and surely will not disappoint.
