210 bhp, 289 cu. in. OHV V-8 engine with a single two-barrel Carter carburetor, two-speed automatic transmission, independent coil-spring front and semi-elliptic leaf-spring rear suspension with a semi-floating rear axle, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 120.5 in.

Bob Bourke, of Raymond Loewy and Associates, had originally designed Studebaker’s sensational coupes that appeared in 1953. In 1956, it was his responsibility to create an all-new look, but this time on a shoestring budget. Bourke was equal to the task. The four new models of the 1956 Studebaker Hawks were dramatic in appearance, with their bold grilles, sculptured sides, small fins, and two-tone colors. The Sky Hawk was a popular alternative, as it was equipped with the 289-cubic inch Studebaker V-8 and came without fins.

This Studebaker Sky Hawk Coupe was delivered new by Lathrop G. Hoffman, the dealer on Beverly Hills’s posh Wilshire Boulevard, in 1956, and it was reportedly pampered for four decades by its original owner before being acquired by renowned collector Art Astor. Today, it remains a sympathetically restored example that has been refinished in its original two-tone white and blue combination. The exterior has been buffed to a high luster, and other than a few minor imperfections, the finish of the paintwork remains in excellent condition. All of the chrome was recently replated, and while the stainless trim is original, the overall impression is one chic Studebaker.

Inside, the blue and white two-tone interior is wonderfully original, with brand-new blue carpets recently fitted to provide a fresher look. Other minor interior fittings have been replaced or refinished, but the original dashboard and steering were in such good condition that they did not require restoration. Under the hood, the powerful V-8 engine has been rebuilt and was recently serviced and partially detailed. The original undercarriage was fully serviced and is very clean and free of rust. The owner notes that the car runs and drives very nicely. Extra niceties include a radio, clock, power antenna, dual chromed exhaust tips, wide whitewalls, and original documentation, including original sales documents and its Studebaker Record and Maintenance Folder.

Studebaker enthusiasts are well aware that a very clean, well-preserved, highly original Studebaker Sky Hawk is rarely offered at auction. Here is an excellent show or cruise vehicle that requires only a driver.
