Styling was all-new for the 1971 Satellite, Road Runner and GTX mid-size cars at Plymouth. The “fuselage” styling on the 115-inch wheelbase cars was similar in concept to that introduced previously on the full-size Fury and pony car Barracuda. Richard Petty ran Road Runners on the NASCAR circuits with his famous No. 43 Plymouth. In 1970 he won 18 races outperforming all other NASCAR drivers. And, one year later, he went on to win still more honors for himself and Plymouth as he won his third Grand National championship.
One of just 2,942 GTX’s produced for 1971, this orange over black example is equipped with a modified 440-cid Super Commando V-8 and Torqueflite automatic transmission. It includes power steering and brakes, AM radio, factory Rallye wheels, BFGoodrich T/A radial tires and a rear deck spoiler. Underdash aftermarket gauges have been added.
