The performance of Pontiac’s force-fed 1980 4.9-liter V8 was comparable to that of the recently departed 6.6 with only 10 less horsepower and a little bit less brute. It was a relatively civilized, quiet car that happened to be as fast as a contemporary Corvette or Camaro Z28 on a road course. You could option the turbo 4.9 into any Firebird, but the Trans Am included a long list of standard features - and a hood bird. Very well equipped and in tip-top shape, this Turbo ‘bird has an automatic transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, AM/FM radio, air conditioning, rear defrost and the gold accessory package that includes the retro gold turbo wheels. From the soft black cloth interior, to the correctly detailed engine compartment, this one stands above the rest. Once one of Pontiac’s top sellers, the Trans Ams, and more specifically the turbo Trans Ams have become illusive and collectors are now avidly seeking fine examples for their collections.
