In 1957, DeSoto introduced its latest iteration of the flagship Adventurer. DeSoto played the role of Chrysler’s sportier sister marque, and the Adventurer, like its Chrysler 300 stablemate, was a high-performance luxury car intended to draw foot traffic into showrooms. The stylish new car represented a high point for Virgil Exner’s revolutionary Forward Look design language, with its dramatic tail fins, intricate detailing, and aviation-inspired flourishes.
The motor car offered is one of just 1,650 Adventurer Sportsman Coupes built in 1957. This attractive example features the 345-cubic-inch version of the legendary Hemi V-8, topped with a factory dual-four-barrel intake. Equipment includes push-button control for the TorqueFlite automatic transmission, factory radio, deluxe heater, and power adjustable front seat. The interior features period-correct upholstery with extensive chrome trim in fine order. Finished in Surf White with Adventurer Gold roof and accents, this Adventurer wears a well-maintained older restoration and remains well suited for regular enjoyment.
For sheer presence and drama, few cars compare to Virgil Exner’s brilliant, Jet Age–inspired DeSoto Adventurer. Nicely restored and well presented, this beautiful example is prime for cruising the boulevard in style.
