This American LaFrance Type 12 was the last restoration completed for Mr. Ruger by vintage fire truck expert Andy Swift of Firefly Restorations in Hope, Maine, with whom Mr. Ruger enjoyed a long and happy friendship that produced numerous beautiful vehicles. Mr. Ruger had collected vintage fire trucks since his youth, with a particular attachment to American LaFrance equipment, and over the years Mr. Swift restored several splendid examples for the collection. Mr. Ruger loved to drive his fire trucks, and they were often put into use chauffeuring guests.

While this particular vehicle had been born a pumper, Mr. Ruger preferred the squad truck configuration, with open rows of seating behind the driver and passenger—all the better to carry family and friends. Mr. Swift painstakingly built correct and authentic squad truck bodywork and finished the American LaFrance chassis to the highest concours standards, both cosmetically and mechanically, including gorgeous paintwork and elaborate gold-leaf striping and decorations. The engine is the largest available, a 120-horsepower T-head six of 5½ in. bore and 6 in. stroke, for a displacement of over 855 cubic inches. Mounted with the relatively light squad truck bodywork, the result is outstanding performance—always one of Mr. Ruger’s foremost considerations.

A stunning example, restored by renowned fire truck restorer Andy Swift, it has been driven approximately 200 miles since completion. It would be a delight to both show and to drive, preferably filled, in the best Ruger tradition, with friends and family—the ultimate party wagon.
