- Single ownership from new with extensive documentation
- Collected new by owner at Mercedes factory in Germany when new
- Highly original, never fully restored
- Iconic W111 Mercedes-Benz Cabriolet
- One of the last examples produced in the final year of production
The Mercedes-Benz range of vehicles produced between 1959 and 1971 were given the chassis code W111. Longer than its predecessors, the W111 cars featured a wider radiator shell, wrap-around windscreen, wider rear window (on sedans) and vertically positioned twin headlamps. Coupe and Convertible models appeared in 1961, minus the already dated-looking tail fins of the saloon. More modern in style, the revised Coupe and Convertible were better appointed too, being equipped as standard with a rev-counter, leather upholstery and four-speed automatic transmission. Front disc brakes were fitted from the start of production. With coachwork hand-built at Sindelfingen and a triple layer soft-top, the 220SE Cabriolet was produced in very limited numbers and just 2,729 were built by the time production ceased in 1965.
This example is coming from single ownership from new. The owner ordered the car new and then traveled to the factory to collect his new car right off the production line. After driving the car around Europe for some time the car was then sent to the owners residence in the United States, where it has remained since. With extensive documentation including the original order sheet, shipping documents and correspondence this 220SE Cabriolet has always been a cherished possession. Never fully restored but always fastidiously maintained and looked after the car has unrepeatable history and provenance.
